About
Experience Saba’s history through the lens of a quaint, 160-year-old sea captain’s cottage at the Harry L. Johnson Museum. Located at the end of Park Lane in Windwardside, this museum is a potpourri of artifacts from Saba’s history, including old photographs of Dutch royalty, historical seafaring documents, paintings, navigational equipment, an organ harmonium, Amerindian artifacts from the island’s first residents, and many other historical pieces from Saba’s history.
The namesake of the museum, Harry Luke Johnson, founded the museum in 1970 to preserve the history of Saba, and much of the holdings consist of his own personal collection. Beyond functional maintenance, most of the original building has been left in its original condition, down to the Wedgwood earthenware on the dining room table, dated to 1880. Outside is a beautifully landscaped park with a gazebo that’s often host to a game of croquet or an Easter egg hunt in the spring. Also on the property is a large outside cistern and a family cemetery.

Question: What’s an average day like as the person best known for welcoming people to the museum?
Answer: A regular day at my job is a fabulous day. Every day I get up, I open my doors to the public to the most prestigious grounds on Saba. I am honored to meet people from all walks of life. It's beautiful to meet people to share our history, our cultures. I love it. I love just sharing everything about Saba with everyone who comes to visit.
