About
The Saba Conservation Foundation is a nonprofit NGO committed to “the preservation and enhancement of Saba’s marine and terrestrial environments through education, scientific research, monitoring, and enforcement.” They’re the designated management agency for Saba’s Mt. Scenery National Park, National Marine Park, and the island’s extensive trails system, in addition to being a member of the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance and serving as a key advisor to the island government on issues of conservation.
On land, the SCF maintains trails and nature around Mt. Scenery, Saba’s highest peak, which hosts a diversity of stunning native plants and animals. Underwater, the Saba National Marine Park encompasses the entire island’s near-shore waters, designated to preserve the vast coral reef ecosystems that lie beneath the surface. The SCF also supports management of the Saba Bank National Park — the largest submarine atoll in the Atlantic Ocean, and the fifth largest of its kind in the world — which harbors whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, over 200 species of fishes, a wide variety of seabirds, and so much more.
The SCF has two on-island locations you’re encouraged to visit: the Trail Shop in Windwardside, and their main office in Fort Bay. Both have incredibly knowledgeable staff, and … some pretty great t-shirts.

Ask an Expert
Question: How does the SCF approach the wide range of work it does, and places it manages?
Answer: We rely entirely on science — we base our management plans, our species management plans, entirely on the advice we get from scientists. Usually first what we do is establish inventories, and then look at the challenges. Based on the results, on the data we receive and the analysis, we adjust our strategies. So for example, every five years we come together and develop new strategic plans for the organization, and those plans are heavily influenced by science, and by the data we receive.
